Castor oil packs are a simple, nourishing self-care practice that can be incorporated into your regular wellness routine. The soft cotton or wool pack is saturated with castor oil and placed directly onto the skin, often with gentle warmth applied over the top.
Castor oil packs are traditionally used over the liver and abdomen to support circulation, relaxation and healthy digestive function. They can be particularly useful during periods of constipation, digestive sluggishness, menstrual cramping or a feeling of congestion, and many people enjoy them simply as a calming ritual for overall health and wellbeing.
Castor oil can also be applied to other areas of the body where there is localised inflammation, tension or discomfort, provided the skin is intact and free from wounds, rashes or irritation.
When might I use one?
A castor oil pack may be especially useful:
Over the right upper abdomen/liver area as part of a relaxing evening wellness ritual
For occasional constipation or sluggish digestion
Around the lower abdomen during menstrual cramping
Over areas of muscular tension or localised inflammation
Whenever you want to slow down, rest and support your body’s natural processes
A note on safety
Castor oil can cause skin irritation or an allergic reaction in some people, so patch-test first and discontinue use if irritation occurs. Do not apply to broken, damaged or irritated skin, and avoid contact with the eyes.
Do not use castor oil packs during pregnancy, particularly over the abdomen, as castor oil has properties that may stimulate uterine contractions.
Avoid using a heat source that is excessively hot, and never sleep with a heated pack in place.
